A few weeks ago, we took a trip back in time and showed off some of the Custom Shop Fenders we currently have available at Austin Bazaar. In keeping with the vintage reissue theme, we wanted to spotlight a pair of custom painted Gretsch Brian Setzer Hot Rods we have that are just itching to be played and given a good home! Their throwback ’50s-style artwork will stand out in a crowd, and the Gretsch name guarantees you’ll also get great tone and a precision build.

#1 - Custom-painted Gretsch Brian Setzer Hot Rod Hollowbody Electric Guitar (Black)

The one-of-a-kind paint job on this Brian Setzer Hot Rod adds even more flair to an already rockin’ single cutaway hollowbody. A faithful reissue of the 6120 hollowbody design of the ’50s, this updated Hot Rod has 1959-style trestle bracing, sweeping f holes, two TV Jones Hot Rod Filter’Tron pickups, and flashy extras including a silver plexi pickguard, Sperzel locking tuners and chrome hardware (chrome pinned Adjusto-Matic bridge and chrome Bigsby B6C vibrato tailpiece). Features a master volume control and a 3-way pickup switch. Devillish retro artwork by artist / musician Vince Ray.

#2 - Custom-painted Gretsch Brian Setzer Hot Rod Hollowbody Electric Guitar (Green)

This Hot Rod has the same specs as listed above, but has an impressive auto body style paint job with green metalflake and sweet details like a double swallow design on the front, hand-detailed pinstriping, an old school pinup illustration on the back, and music note graphics on the front, back, and sides of the guitar.

Gretsch G6199 Billy-Bo Jupiter Thunderbird Electric Guitar – Firebird Red

The Billy-Bo is a modern version of the Jupiter Thunderbird designed in 1959 by Bo Diddley himself. Billy F. Gibbons fell in love with an original given to him by Bo Diddley, but added some of his own mojo to this new version that he created as his touring axe. The Billy-Bo features a heavily chambered mahogany body, one-piece mahogany neck, ultra-thin laminate maple top, TV Jones Power’Tron (neck) and Power’Tron “Plus” (bridge) pickups, pinned Adjusto-matic bridge, and Schaller Straplocks. It’s a dirty, low-down rock guitar with serious credentials and a vibe that hasn’t lessened in nearly 50 years. We’ve also got the bass version.

Gretsch G6134LH White Penguin Electric Guitar, Left Handed – White

This one’s for you lefties out there. A veritable holy grail among classic electric guitar aficionados, the Gretsch White Penguin combines the gold and glitter of the Falcon with the sleek style of the Duo Jet. Features include single-cutaway semi-hollow body with arched top and gold-sparkle binding, one-piece mahogany neck, gold-sparkle-bound ebony fingerboard with feather-motif hump block inlays, gold-sparkle-bound headstock with inlaid winged Gretsch logo and gold-sparkle truss rod cover, dual DynaSonic single-coil pickups, three-position pickup switch, gold plexi pickguard with Penguin motif, rhinestone and white dot control knob inlays, Synchro-Sonic bridge, Gretsch “G” Cadillac tailpiece, gold-plated Grover Imperial tuners, banjo armrest and gold-plated hardware.

Gretsch G6118 Anniversary Electric Guitar – Two-Tone Smoke Green

Created in 1958 to celebrate Gretsch’s 75th anniversary, the 6118 Anniversary had an ultra-cool two-tone smoke green finish straight from that era’s Cadillac. Today’s model still has it, with other features including dual Filter’Tron pickups, Space Control bridge and “G”-cutout tailpiece. Other features include an arched laminated maple top, Plexi pickguard in a truly unique shade of green, bound fingerboard and headstock and multiple body bindings.

Austin Bazaar would like to offer a moment of silence to a man known for making things loud. Jim Marshall, founder of Marshall Amps, passed away today at the age of 88. He created his first amp in 1960 in England, and since then the name “Marshall” has become ubiquitous with amps in the world of rock and roll. He was truly a beloved figure to musicians everywhere- his amps found a home among musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Pete Townshend.

Below are a few images of Jim throughout the years (images from biography by Rich Maloof) as well as a great signature from both Jim Marshall and Slash to our own store manager and buyer Casey. We’ve also included an incredible video tribute by the UK newspaper the Mirror, a full minute-long recording of classic Marshall guitar feedback.

The video below stars the acoustic-electric 716ce. The guitar shown in the video is one of the redesigned 716ce models, made with Engelmann spruce top and Indian Rosewood back and sides. Taylor is referring to the 716ce as their ‘Americana guitar’ made evident by the vintage sunburst finish and distinctive inlays.
