Memorial Day is often regarded as the start of the summer season. For most people, this means kicking off a steady diet of barbecue, sunny days, and swimming. However, Memorial Day is more than just an extra day off, and we wanted to share a few memorial day facts with you.

1. The first known observance of Memorial Day was in May of 1865, when it was known as “Decoration Day.” Although called “Memorial Day” for years, it wasn’t until 1967 when Federal law made the name change official.

2. One of the longest-standing Memorial Day traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, an auto race which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911.

3. On Memorial Day, the flag is lowered to half-staff until noon. At noon the flag is raised back to full-staff.

4. Ironton, Ohio, lays claim to the nation’s oldest continuously running Memorial Day parade dating back to May 5, 1868.

Austin Bazaar wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable long Memorial Day weekend. We appreciate the 3-day weekend, but appreciate the men and women who have served and given their lives for this country even more.  Have a great weekend everyone!
